The importance of community for your mental wellbeing

15 May 2025

When we feel part of a community, if offers enormous benefits to our mental health and wellbeing.

For Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, the theme is the power and importance of community, something we at MindSpace truly believe in.

We are proud to be a place where you can not only find your own community within MindSpace, but somewhere that supports our local community and beyond with activities and groups which benefit your mental wellbeing.

Why Community?

Communities provide a sense of belonging, of safety and support. According to the Mental Health Foundation, being part of a community can reduce symptoms of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and stress. This is because you can gain support with managing your symptoms and feel less alone with them. When you are part of a strong community, you are also more protected against experiencing mental health challenges.

At MindSpace, we understand that being part of a community can give us a sense of purpose. We can feel part of something and more involved in projects or activities which can boost our self-esteem.

Communities also give us access to support networks which can help us with friendship and reassurance when needed. They can help combat social isolation, which means you are less likely to experience loneliness and the mental health challenges associated with it such as depression and anxiety.

How MindSpace can help you find community

We have a range of activities and events on every week, which bring people together and enable you to make new friends and find a group of people to connect with.

With activities ranging from creative sessions, gardening, and mindfulness, to physical fitness, self-development and learning and social groups, there is something you can find that will suit your interests and meet your needs at the time.

Our activities are led by friendly volunteers and trained listeners who will welcome you to the group and provide a listening ear should you need one.

How to become part of a MindSpace community

We know that community can help us to feel happier and boost our mental wellbeing. Here is how you can become involved with the MindSpace community:

Have fun: Come along to an activity. Find something which you enjoy and at the same time, make new connections and meet likeminded people with similar interests.

Learn something new: From sign language to sketching, find an activity that helps you develop new skills. It can help you form bonds with people who are learning alongside you and sharing the experience.

Volunteer: Our amazing volunteers are a crucial part of our MindSpace community. Giving back can help give you a sense of purpose and fulfilment and can help you make new friends.
