Stamford Mayor running Mayor’s MindSpace Mile for mental health
Do you fancy joining the Mayor of Stamford on a run raising funds for MindSpace?
Stamford Mayor, Councillor Amanda Wheeler will be raising awareness, and charity funds, celebrating the benefits of running this World Mental Health Day.
She will be participating in two runs in aid of one of her chosen charities, MindSpace Stamford, on Friday October 10th and is inviting anyone who wishes to join her to sign up and take part.
On the Friday morning, she will be joining the MindSpace running group for a special 5k run, with the route starting at Stamford Rugby Club and ending at the new MindSpace hub on Red Lion Street for refreshments.
In the evening, she will be running ‘The Mayor’s MindSpace Mile’, a specially-selected mile-long route through Stamford, starting at The Town Hall Terrace and also ending at MindSpace for drinks and refreshments.
The benefits of running
Running is physical exercise that gets the heart pumping and can improve cardiovascular fitness. It strengthens your muscles and studies show it can even help you live longer!
Not only is it beneficial for physical health, it can help you reduce stress, by shedding some of the mental load, and elevate your mood so you feel better.
Councillor Wheeler took up running as a new challenge at the start of the year. She says: ‘I originally committed to running 5k three times a week, but it’s become a bit more than that and so I am now running my first ever half marathon for Great Ormond Street Hospital on October 12th… Besides the physical health I’m getting from running, it is also helping me mentally. Running has ironically slowed me down. It means that I take time out from a hectic schedule every other day and connect with nature.’
She adds: ‘I wanted to fundraise for Mindspace on World Mental Health Day, as Mindspace is one of my charities this year. World Mental Health Day conveniently falls two days before my half marathon so it seemed the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the positivity that running can offer you by creating the Mayor’s Mindspace Mile and running alongside other people.’
How to take part
Everyone is welcome to join the runs and sign up for either the 5k or 1 mile routes – or both! Entry will be on a pay-as-you-feel basis on the day. There is also an opportunity to buy a technical running MindSpace T-shirt for the occasion. All funds will go to MindSpace.
Order your running T-shirt and wear it on the day!
