Conversation Benches bring Stamford community together, one chat at a time

22 July 2026

A new initiative to combat loneliness and strengthen community connections is coming to Stamford as MindSpace, launches regular Conversation Benches in the town centre.

Members of the MindSpace team will be sitting on benches in the heart of Stamford, welcoming anyone who would like to stop for a friendly, informal chat, whether it’s a quick hello, a catch-up over a cuppa and cake, or a deeper conversation.

The initiative stems from the belief that small conversations can have a positive impact on our mental wellbeing. It reflects the charity’s mission to create safe, welcoming spaces where people are heard and valued, and reinforces their work to improve mental wellbeing through compassionate listening and human connection.

It aims to promote the importance of connection in the community, encourage meaningful conversations, and reduce loneliness. According to The Campaign to End Loneliness, nearly half of adults (49.63%) experience loneliness to some degree.

More opportunities for connection

MindSpace first introduced Conversation Benches during Loneliness Awareness Week in June. Following the overwhelmingly positive response, they have decided to make these an ongoing monthly feature and continue providing these opportunities for connection throughout the year.

Pip Tiffin, Operations Manager at MindSpace, says: ‘We know social connection is vital to our mental wellbeing, particularly at a time when so many of our interactions are done digitally and via a screen. The Conversation Benches show that support and companionship can begin with something as simple as saying hello. We understand everyone has a story and faces challenges as we go through life’s ups and downs. We can all benefit from talking with others, whether that’s a friendly chat, or a deeper, more personal conversation. Being able to share parts of your story can help foster a greater sense of belonging, and remind people they are part of a supportive and caring community,’

The Conversation Benches are an invitation to talk face to face with MindSpace volunteers on different benches in town once a month. They are not bookable appointments but are an opportunity for anyone to pop down, take a seat, and have a chat when the team are out and about.

Keep an eye out for the MindSpace team on benches in places such as St Michael’s Church square, the Meadows, Broad Street and Red Lion Square.
